3rd Regional Conference on Integral Protection

Banja Luka, 3 and 4 November 2008

The Institute for the Protection of the Cultural, Historical and Natural Heritage of Republika Srpska, Banja Luka, and the European Centre for Peace and Development (ECPD) of the United Nations Peace University, Belgrade, held the 3rd regional conference on integral protection on 3 and 4 November 2008 in Banja Luka. The theme of the conference was “The Protection of the Cultural and Natural Heritage in Changing Global Circumstances.”


Members of staff from the Commission to Preserve National Monuments were among those attending the conference.  Amra Šarančić, staff member specializing in built ensembles and cultural landscapes, spoke on the development of management plans: the example of Blagaj.” Zijad Halilović, the Commission’s archaeology specialist, gave a talk on the impact of contemporary changes on the state of necropolises with stećci – usurpation, neglect, displacement. Four members of staff, Mirzah Fočo, Alisa Marjanović, Orjana Mujkić and Slobodanka Nikolić, presented the projects carried out by the Commission to Preserve National Monuments and funded by the US Ambassador’s Fund, all designed to carry out urgent repairs on monuments and provide education and training for primary school children and students. The monuments concerned are the Ferhadija mosque in Banja Luka, St Nicholas’s church in Trijebanj and the church of SS Peter and Paul in Ošanići near Stolac, and the Mehmed Pasha Kukavica and Aladža mosques in Foča.
